About the Temple

On the bank of the Madhuvahini river, a short drive from Kasaragod town, stands one of the most striking temples of north Kerala. Its three-tiered roof rises in the gajaprishta style – curved like the back of an elephant – and the whole building sits among paddy fields and coconut palms beside the water.

The main deity is Shiva as Madanantheswara, yet most pilgrims come for the Ganapathi who shares the sanctum, facing south. Devotees know him as Siddhivinayaka, the one who grants success, and the temple's appam, made fresh every day, is loved as his prasadam. Madhur is counted among the six great Ganapathi shrines of old Tulunadu, and it draws devotees from both Kerala and Karnataka.

History & Aithihyam

The story goes that a woman named Madaru, from the local Moger community, came upon a Shiva linga that had appeared by itself in this place, and the shrine grew up around it; the village is said to carry her name. Later, devotees say, a boy playing in the sanctum drew a figure of Ganapathi on the southern wall. The drawing kept growing, and people began to call it the 'Bodda Ganesha' – the big-bellied Ganesha – who became the heart of the temple's worship.

Another well-known tale is told about the temple well. When Tipu Sultan's army came through the region in the late 18th century, it is said that he intended to destroy the temple, but after drinking water from the well he changed his mind. To satisfy his men he struck the building once with his sword, and devotees still point out the mark.

Historically, the temple is linked with the Mayipady rulers of Kumbla, who are said to have built it around the 10th century; it took its present form in a renovation around the 15th century. The roof is copper-clad on the upper tiers, and the wooden pillars, beams and mandapam are richly carved with scenes from the Ramayana and with Ganapathi in many poses. The well in the courtyard is believed to have healing water. Today the temple is under government Devaswom administration and its priests follow the Shivalli Brahmin tradition.

The temple is also known for the Moodappa Seva, in which the whole Ganapathi idol is covered with appam. Because it is so large an undertaking, it is held only rarely – in living memory in 1962 and 1992 – and each time it draws huge crowds.
